What we do

At the Institute, we build athlete pathways. These are structured journeys for athletes to follow. From first starting out in a sport to becoming elite performers. We’re committed to giving athletes more opportunities for longer. Reducing injuries, burnout and dropout.

We believe performance isn’t just about winning now. It’s about building stronger, resilient, science-led sport systems. Ensuring we design success, rather than leaving it to chance.

We have 2 key areas of focus. The first is providing world-class support to individual athletes in Wales. The other is addressing consistent problems that stop athletes from reaching their potential. Both within specific sports and across disciplines. We aim to recognise the untapped opportunities that can help solve these problems.

Athlete services

Our disciplines all work collaboratively together.

Performance lifestyle

Helping athletes manage the demands of training and competition with life outside sport. We provide tailored support on how to balance personal and professional development. Focusing on wellbeing, dual careers and transitioning out of sport. We recognise and support athletes as whole people.

We help athletes:

  • sustain performance and success in and out of sport
  • embed wellbeing and life balance in their daily practice
  • develop skills and confidence, which will also help them beyond their sporting careers
Medical services

Using evidence-based medicine to support long-term athlete health and performance. We work with other Institute services to keep athletes safe and reduce unnecessary risk.

  • We help athletes and their teams:
  • manage illness and injury
  • make good decision under pressure
  • plan their return to performance after injury
  • translate national health guidance into high performance medical advice
Nutrition

Using the power of food to enhance health and performance. Both during training and at competitions.

We help athletes:

  • apply the concepts of fuelling, recovery and hydration
  • plan nutrition strategies for training and competitions
  • manage body composition, including in weight category sports
  • have a positive relationship with food
Performance analysis

Helping athletes and coaches understand and monitor performance in training and competition. Combining data, video and evidence-based insight.

  • We support athletes and coaches by:
  • tracking athletes’ day-to-day development and supporting their long-term progress
  • breaking down performances to guide improvements
  • analysing opponents and competition to aid preparation
  • providing clear, focused and usable feedback
Physiology

Understanding how the human body responds, adapts and performs in elite sport. We focus on what makes the most difference physically for each sport. Using this knowledge to help plan training for athletes.

We support athletes by:

  • monitoring physiological responses to training
  • tracking and managing internal and external training load
  • advising how best to warm up, fuel and recover for competitions
  • helping them cope with long haul travel, and performing in the heat and at altitude
Physiotherapy

Using science-led physiotherapy to shape performance recovery. We work alongside coaches and teams to help athletes be as resilient as possible. We go beyond just treating injury.

  • We help athletes and their coaches:
  • anticipate injury risks
  • be physically robust
  • train consistently for sustainable performance
Psychology

Creating sporting environments where athletes feel safe, connected and cared for. We work with athletes, coaches and performance teams. Shaping what athletes see, hear and feel every day within their environments.

  • Our approach to mental health aims to:
  • consider relationships and lived experiences of athletes
  • build environments where athletes can thrive
  • improve both performance and athlete experiences
Strength and conditioning

Developing muscular strength, power and endurance. To improve athletic performance and reduce the risk of injury. We aim to help athletes take responsibility for their own physical preparation. Giving them the necessary physical skills, knowledge and confidence.

We help athletes by:

  • considering individual needs through testing and designing training
  • advising on training for the demands of specific sports
  • providing long-term monitoring
