Sport partnerships have been set up for 5 regions of Wales. These partnerships will focus on sport and physical activity in their respective regions. Providing:

  • strategic leadership
  • planning
  • decision making

Sport partnerships aim to help us:

  • address inequalities in sport
  • increase the diversity of strategic partners and service providers within each region
  • get opportunities in place for people who are not regularly physically active
  • remove barriers for people who need the most help to take part in sport
  • meet the high demand from people who are active but want to do more
  • share and combine knowledge, resources, skills and learning across each region
Improving access

Our vision for sport in Wales is to have an active nation where everyone can have a lifelong enjoyment of sport. But there are still barriers to people taking part in sport, at a regional and local level.

Taking part in physical activity at least 3 times a week is proven to help with wellbeing. From our research, we know that many groups do not take part in physical activity this often. This includes:

  • over 50% of all girls
  • over 67% of all young people from the most under-served communities
  • around 67% of all young people who identify as from ethnically diverse backgrounds
  • more than 50% of young people with a disability
  • 67% of adults

However, we also know that 93% of school pupils and 31% of adults said they would like to do more sport. Our regional sport partnerships are aiming to better meet this demand.

Developing the partnerships

Each partnership is led by an executive lead and an independent chair and board. They’re people who know their region. Who know how to reach the groups that are not currently taking part in physical activity. They're helping their partnerships develop, grow and evolve over time.

We're working with each partnership to support these processes. We’re helping ensure that each partnership is:

  • using research and insights effectively
  • focusing on what will make the greatest impact on our vision for sport
  • working together collaboratively and creatively
  • putting the individuals taking part at the core of their thinking
