We invest public money to help organisations grow and help deliver the vision for sport. This includes money from the Welsh Government and the National Lottery. We make sure this money is used properly and delivers real impact.

Our investment approach is transparent and allows partners to make their own decisions in their areas.

We expect partners to meet, and exceed, a set standard for us to invest in them. To help this, we’ve developed the Arwain Cymru framework. Find out more about the framework.

If you’re a new prospective partner, please contact info@sport.wales

Our approaches

We primarily use nationally held data about partners to inform our investment. For partners that we don’t have this data for, we use a principles-driven approach. This approach uses a framework where partners submit information about their activities.

Using data

We invest in national governing bodies (NGBs) and regional sport partnerships using data taken from:

  • national surveys
  • official statistics
  • performance data

This approach reduces the need for partners to provide data and evidence to us.

Using principles

When we cannot get national statistics for a partner, we use 3 key principles to decide how much we invest. We look at how a partner is:

  • creating an equal, diverse and inclusive sport sector
  • enhancing Welsh sport
  • building capacity in their organisation

The approach aims to invest in a range of different partners. Helping to focus resources and expertise across Wales and serve under-represented groups.

Appeals

Partners can appeal the process we’ve used to come to an investment decision. To find out more, read our appeal procedure
