Introduction

Do you deliver physical activities for children aged 3 to 11 years old? Do you want to help children develop a lifelong love of being active? We’ve worked with the Welsh sports sector to create this good practice guide to help you. 

The framework contains 3 foundations of children’s needs: 

  • safety 
  • enjoyment 
  • development 

Each foundation details what children need from sport and physical activity. And how you should meet those needs. Read, learn and watch our coaching videos.

Foundation 1: Safety

Feeling safe in indoor and outdoor activity spaces

You should: 

  • be aware of safeguarding policies and procedures 
  • know who the designated safeguarding lead is in your organisation 
  • ensure the environment meets required safeguarding standards 
  • have the right number of coaches to ensure safe practice 
Having opportunities for problem solving

You should create environments where a child can face and solve challenges. Challenges should consider a child’s: 

  • development needs 
  • past experiences 
Having someone who knows them and can support their wellbeing

You should: 

  • get to know the children who are participating 
  • support children when they face external challenges or struggle to join in 
  • create environments where children feel safe to express their emotions 
Feeling like they fit in

You should: 

  • be welcoming and empathetic to every child 
  • understand and celebrate the uniqueness of each child and their families 
  • make every child and their responsible adult feel like they belong 
Feeling good about themselves

You should: 

  • take a consistent approach to behaviour 
  • praise and mirror positive behaviour 
  • encourage children to respect everyone and lose with dignity 

Foundation 2: Enjoyment

Having opportunities that suit their needs

Children learn in different ways. Activities should be: 

  • inclusive 
  • accessible 
  • suitable for all

Able to give ideas and make their own choices

You should: 

  • encourage children to contribute to activities 
  • make children feel comfortable about sharing their views 
  • notice both verbal and non-verbal communication 
Participating in fun activities with friends and family

You should: 

  • be an approachable and friendly coach or leader who creates great experiences 
  • encourage children to return again and again 
  • emphasise family engagement and the social side of sport

Having time to play and be active

You should: 

  • avoid inactive periods or activities where children need to queue to wait their turn 
  • control activity time using clear, concise instructions without shouting 
  • make time for unstructured play and creativity 
Feeling their efforts and improvements are valued

You should: 

  • provide praise, encouragement and positive reinforcement 
  • focus on the process over the outcome 
  • recognise a child’s hard work, intentions and creativity 
  • provide activities that develop confidence, motivation and resilience 
  • encourage children to try new activities and embrace new challenges 

Foundation 3: Development

Being supported by qualified people

Activities should be designed and delivered by qualified coaches, volunteers, leaders and teachers. As a deliverer, you should: 

  • understand the importance of physical activity for children 
  • provide meaningful, understandable feedback to children 
  • ask questions to children to check they understand what you’re telling them 
Developing their physical skills

You should: 

  • ensure children can build fundamental movement skills through a range of different activities 
  • plan programmes which allow for children’s development 
  • know how transferable skills from different sports can benefit children

Exploring their relationship with movement and physical activity

You should: 

  • encourage children to support each while they explore movement within an activity 
  • be aware of the feelings, needs and risks of children while they develop their skills 
Moving daily

You should create environments and activities that: 

  • allow plenty of time for children to be active 
  • promote daily movement 
  • emphasise the importance of regular physical activity 
Working hard to improve

Your activities should: 

  • consider a child’s level of social, emotional, mental and physical development 
  • challenge and support a child’s overall development 
Learning from success and mistakes

Children develop at different rates. Your environments and activities should: 

  • be based on the development needs of a child, not their age 
  • provide a safe space where children can make mistakes and learn from them

You should: 

  • provide activities in different environments with a range of equipment 
  • involve children and their responsible adults in selecting activities 
  • choose equipment that matches a child’s development and skill levels 

Online learning and resources

Foundations 360

Foundations 360 is a free online self-reflection tool for your club or organisation. It helps you see how well you’re meeting the needs detailed in each foundation. The tool asks you to reflect on and share how: 

  • it feels to be part of your organisation 
  • children take part and engage 
  • you support your coaches to grow and improve 

Based on your responses, the tool gives you a report that: 

  • highlights your club or organisation’s strengths 
  • identifies areas for development 
  • directs you to relevant resources that may help you

Webinars 

Aneurin Bevan NHS University Health Board have produced a 4-part webinar series on YouTube. Focused on how to support children’s emotional needs in sport. The webinars aim to help coaches provide safe physical activity spaces for children.

Building foundations for sport (Short course) 

This course is for coaches and volunteers working with children aged 3 to 11 years old. It will help you better deliver the principles of the Foundations Framework. 

The course consists of 5 hours of flexible online learning, plus a 1-day practical workshop.

Disability inclusion training for coaches and volunteers 

Disability Sport Wales provide different levels of training for coaches and volunteers. These include: 

  • 60- to 90-minute online learning modules 
  • a 1-hour classroom theory session through Zoom 
  • a 2-hour face-to-face practical session
