Overcoming a fear of heights and chatting with new friends are just two of the benefits of climbing sessions for over 60s in Swansea.

Funded by Welsh Government and Sport Wales, the 60+ Active Leisure Scheme helps give people aged over 60 more access to take part in sports and physical activities so that they can live healthier and happier lives.

Each year, £800,000 is distributed to the 22 local authorities across Wales to deliver the scheme, and over the last four years more than 7,000 older people have benefitted from free and subsidised activities. A huge variety of sports have become available through the scheme, and climbing is one of many discounted activities offered by Swansea Council’s Sport and Health team.

Sarah McCoubrey, Health and Well-being Manager at Swansea Council said: “There's a certain stereotype about adventure activities such as climbing only being suitable for younger age groups, but 60 isn’t old and climbing is a really fun activity that benefits both your physical and mental wellbeing.

“The feedback we’ve had since running these sessions at the Dynamic Rock Indoor Climbing Centre is that climbing can boost your confidence and makes you feel great. Participants have really enjoyed learning a new skill. We’re looking forward to developing the programme further across Swansea with a variety of activities that appeal to local people.”

One participant, Ron Jenkins, said of the sessions: “I'm having a tremendous time on the 60+ Rock Climbing sessions. Climbing is a good form of exercise, and is improving my strength, balance, confidence and overall wellbeing. I'm always looking forward to the next weekly session.

“I've been steadily improving since I started at the end of 2023 and have recently managed a couple of tougher grade 6b climbs with advice and loads of encouragement from instructors and fellow climbers. Next stop Everest!”

Demonstrating the need for schemes to entice older people into a more active lifestyle, the latest Wales Activity Tracker survey - compiled by Savanta on behalf of Sport Wales - found that 22% of people aged 55+ in Wales don’t do any exercise. However, the scheme isn’t just about improving access to sporting activites for older people – attending sports clubs and activities are also proven to help in reducing social isolation. At Dynamic Rock, participants arrive half an hour before the session for refreshments and a chat, before taking part in an hour of climbing with an instructor.

Participant Alan Pritchard has found the social side of the sessions really beneficial, saying: “I’ve really enjoyed the free indoor climbing sessions. It was good to meet other people and chat to them both before and during the sessions. This format allowed me to attend alone but always have someone of a similar age to climb with.”

Angela Howells agreed, saying of her experience at Dynamic Rock: “I saw this offer online and thought I would try it. I wasn't really expecting to enjoy it as I am scared of heights and my joints aren't good due to my age and arthritis, but I have loved the climbing sessions.

“I can't do as much as others but I am so happy with my own achievement. I have met lovely people there who are really encouraging, and I am so grateful to be given the chance of a new experience.”

Funding for the 60+ Active Leisure Scheme has been confirmed until 2025, so older adults in Wales can continue to reap the benefits. For more information about activities for over 60s in your area, visit your local leisure centre.
