Clarbeston Road AFC are making an important contribution to local biodiversity after successfully planting a wildflower meadow.

The Pembrokeshire team have created a busy wildlife habitat between their football pitches. By allowing nature to thrive, the meadows play a role in supporting the eco system by providing shelter and food for pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Steve Brown, Clarbeston Road AFC chairman shared:

“We believe that our football club can play an important role in helping to educate and influence not only our club members but also the wider community about the importance of positive environmental actions.

We believe that our football club can play an important role in helping to educate and influence about the importance of positive environmental actions.

“We’ve already seen increased insect and bird activity in the seeded area and we’re hopeful that we are making a small but important contribution to local biodiversity. We also hope that by allowing natural re-seeding we will be able to sustain the wildflowers for future years.

“There have also been practical benefits for us in that we are saving volunteer time as well as the fuel costs of regular strimming of the embankment. We hope that other sports clubs with similar spaces for wildflower meadows consider doing the same as us.”

Sport Wales is prioritising the fight against climate change to ensure that Wales maintains an environment in which sport can continue to thrive for future generations. Preserving nature and biodiversity is a key part of protecting the environment, as Emma Wilkins says:

“Sport has a strong connection to biodiversity as many activities rely on green spaces, lakes, rivers, oceans and forests. It is critical that sports clubs and organisations help to protect nature and curb their own impact on the environment.

The work being done by Clarbeston Road AFC is a brilliant example of how sports clubs in Wales can enable biodiversity to flourish at their own facilities.”

Sport Wales, as part of the Sport Environment and Climate Coalition (SECC), has helped to develop an online hub of key resources to help sports clubs and organisations to reduce their environmental impact. Visit the SECC Resource Hub here.
