  4. Improved sports facilities to capitalise on Olympic fever

Has the action-packed 3v3 basketball in the Olympics got you or your kids itching to get on a court to try out the sport?

Or perhaps the thrills of the rugby 7s, football, hockey and tennis events have inspired you?

Thanks to Sport Wales funding, many communities across Wales can look forward to enjoying these five Olympic sports, plus netball, on new and improved surfaces.

New courts for basketball, netball and tennis

During the last 12 months, around £800,000 has been invested by Sport Wales – using Welsh Government money – on ‘court collaboration’ projects to create better facilities for playing basketball, netball and tennis.

Sport Wales worked together with Tennis Wales, Wales Netball and Basketball Wales, as well as local authorities, to select key locations which lacked modern facilities. Decisions over which sites to upgrade were driven by the demand in each area among children to play those particular sports, as indicated by the School Sport Survey 2022.

For example, the survey found that 43% of children in Torfaen wanted more opportunities to play basketball, so a court refurbishment project in Blaenavon which prioritises basketball makes perfect sense.

Using the funding, run-down or unused courts are being transformed with new surfaces, line markings and the necessary hoops and nets.

New pitches for football, rugby and hockey

Just over £1m has also been allocated to either upgrade or create new artificial pitches which will improve opportunities for playing rugby, football and hockey. Four projects have shared the funding during the last 12 months, with Sport Wales working in tandem with the Welsh Rugby Union, Football Association of Wales and Hoci Cymru to deliver the right types of artificial pitches in the right parts of Wales.

Meeting demand

Commenting on the investments, Sport Wales CEO Brian Davies said: “We’re always pleased to support our partner organisations to provide better sports courts and artificial pitches in places around Wales that need them the most.

“The court collaborations meet demand for more spaces where people can enjoy casual games of tennis, netball and basketball, while there continues to be high demand for artificial pitches.

“We’re committed to working with our partners to make sport as accessible as possible so that every person who is inspired by seeing Welsh athletes competing on the biggest stage this summer has the chance to enjoy the sports that appeal to them.

“Whether they pick up a table tennis bat for the first time, or try their hand at basketball or BMX or skateboarding, we want every person in Wales to find enjoyment in sport and continue to be active throughout their lives.

“Another round of court collaboration funding will be invested into communities during this financial year, with expressions of interest being invited from local authorities in early September.

“Applications for this year’s pitch collaboration fund closed recently, and we look forward to announcing the successful projects later this year.”

Which projects have benefited from funding during the last 12 months?

Court collaboration

Neath Port Talbot – Grant award: £73,745

Work on two fresh tennis courts, two basketball courts and one netball court was recently completed at Port Talbot Memorial Park, near the town centre.

Neath Port Talbot – Grant award: £77,384

In Cwmafan, where there’s interest in starting up a new tennis club, the old run-down tennis courts at Parc y Llyn have been refurbished to create one full-size tennis court along with a basketball court together with netball markings.

Gwynedd – Grant award: £105,916

Several indoor and outdoor courts are being resurfaced and re-lined at the Arfon Tennis Centre so that tennis, basketball and netball can be played.

Pembrokeshire – Grant award: £12,501

Tennis is the focus sport for the upgraded facilities at Ysgol Caer Elen in Haverfordwest, but netball and basketball will also benefit. The facilities will be available for both school and community use.

Wrexham – Grant award: £69,780

At Rhosnesni High School in Wrexham, six netball/tennis courts that had seen better days are being transformed and will also create a new home for Rhosnesni Netball Club.

Bridgend – Grant award: £84,750

At Caedu Park, in Ogmore Vale, netball is the priority sport driving the refurbishment of an old basketball court into a brand new multi-use games area (MUGA) court complete with all necessary line markings that will also enable basketball and tennis to be played.

Bridgend – Grant award: £82,500

Another MUGA for playing all three sports is being created at Maesteg Welfare Park in place of the old tennis courts.

Torfaen – Grant award: £102,297

A court refurbishment at Blaenavon Park is primarily aimed at meeting local demand for basketball but will also include provision for tennis and netball.

Monmouthshire – Grant award: £100,000

A new full-size outdoor netball court and two practice shooting areas at Monmouthshire Sports Ground will significantly improve local opportunities for netball and provide a new base for Monmouth Netball Club. The refurbished facilities will also cater for tennis and casual basketball.

Flintshire – Grant award: £96,500

Alun School in Mold is undergoing improvements that will benefit school pupils and the local community. Tennis is the focus of this refurbishment, but there will also be courts for netball and basketball, much to the delight of Mold Netball Club and Mold Basketball Club.

Pitch collaborations

Gwynedd – Grant award: £200,000

As the 19-year-old hockey pitch at Ysgol Godre’r Berwyn in Bala has come to the end of its life, the facility is being transformed to create a new playing surface.

Carmarthenshire – Grant award: £418,906

A new 3G pitch is being built at Llandovery RFC which will be suitable for rugby, football and other sports. The Sport Wales funding is being used to leverage other funding as part of an exciting development at the club.

Conwy – Grant award: £250,000

A full size 3G pitch, suitable for football, rugby and other sports, is being built at Ysgol y Creuddyn for use by the school as well as the local community.

Rhondda Cynon Taf – Grant award: £150,000

The primary hockey pitch for Rhondda Cynon Taf can be found at Ysgol Afon Wen (the updated name of Hawthorn High School). The pitch is being given a fresh surface as part of a wider package of upgrades to make the site into a local centre of hockey excellence.

Please note that some of these projects have already been completed while others are due for completion soon. Please also note that many of the projects may be reliant on other funding streams.
