Sports clubs across Wales are feeling the benefits of the Energy Saving Grant. In 2023, Sport Wales awarded nearly £1.4m to 79 different clubs – and already, they’re seeing a difference.

But don’t just take our word for it! Here are some of their experiences and advice on using an Energy Saving Grant.

St Asaph Cricket Club

St Asaph Cricket Club are reaping the rewards of their £7,323 grant which was used to purchase battery storage facilities for their solar panels. With these improvements, they can save up the excess solar energy and sell it back to the grid.

Gareth Williams said: “The project has already seen the club achieve a significant reduction in our monthly running costs in addition to also helping us to have a compensating reduction in our carbon footprint.

“The financial cost savings has allowed the Club to meet other ‘cost of living’ expenses as well as allowing us to re-invest into our playing and social facilities. For example, we hope to part fund the costs of a new bowling machine and feeder through our energy savings realised.”

Giants Grave Boys & Girls Club

Giants Grave Boys & Girls Club in Neath can focus on delivering in their community and put rising costs to the back of their mind after receiving £22,902 for solar panels.

Chris McKenzie said :“This Energy Saving Grant has protected the future of our club and now we can focus on the needs of young people again without worrying about increasing energy costs every year."

Mold Golf Club

The golf buggies at Mold Golf Club are using solar energy to navigate their way around the course. Thanks to £13,666 from the Energy Saving Grant, 16 additional solar panels have now been installed at Mold.

Deborah Barton said: “Take a look at all elements of your business and see where you can improve. Accessing Sport Wales funding has taken the pressure off and enabled us to improve the way we operate in terms of our environment and also, in terms of cost savings and energy efficiency. The team at Sport Wales are very helpful and supportive.”

Port Dinorwic Sailing Club

An Energy Saving Grant of £21,003 helped Port Dinorwic Sailing Club to install solar panel, energy efficient lighting and spark conversation at their club.

Noel Bristow said: “The solar panels have been a talking point at the club and have got people thinking about how they can reduce their carbon footprint themselves.

“Think big and be adventurous. This grant scheme will give you the opportunity to make a real difference to your club’s environmental impact and carbon footprint, as well as saving you money on your bills.”

Tennis Swansea 365

LED lighting and motion sensors have been installed at Tennis Swansea 365 with a £25,000 Energy Saving Grant. They feel that the funding is an opportunity to align the goals of your sports club with those of the nation.

Collette Richard said: “Don’t hesitate! Wales is working towards a low carbon future and so anything that moves your organisation in that direction, at little cost to you, should be grabbed with both hands. It will allow you to fit solar panels, LED lighting and other energy saving equipment to save you money on your utility bills.”

Abergavenny Cricket Club

Solar panels, roof insulation, LED lighting and a new cooling system for the cellar are the energy saving changes at Abergavenny Cricket Club, thanks to £21,214 from Sport Wales. Using an approved energy assessor helped support their application.

Steve Lesbriel said: “Read all of the documents sent to you and engage with one of the approved energy assessors as early as possible. The assessor will highlight other areas and products that could save you energy and this will allow you more time to get estimates and information to support the grant application.”

Garden Village Bowling Club

£624 from the Energy Saving Grant was used to improve the hot water system at Garden Village Bowling Club in Wrexham. They have some advice for other sports clubs in Wales.

Christopher Revill said: “Apply! Be honest in what you want and the reasons and how it will benefit the members of your club.  It could be worth it. The application is not as difficult as you may think it is.”
