What does the committee do?
A dynamic and effective committee (or board) is important to drive a club forward.
A committee will make decisions on behalf of the club and will take on duties to ensure everything runs smoothly. Its purpose is to serve the club members.
This means you need the right people with the right skills, the right experience and lots of enthusiasm.
Who do you need on a committee?
Before recruiting your committee, it’s a good idea to make a list of the roles you need.
As the club develops you may wish to consider recruiting people into the following roles:
- Chair
- Coach/Coaching/Manager
- Welfare Officer
- Fundraising Officer
- Marketing Officer
- Volunteer Co-ordinator
- Youth Representative
Even though it’s not a paid role, it’s a good idea to draft role descriptions. It will help people understand what is required of them. And it will help you work out what skills and experience you need for each role. You can use these as the basis of your job descriptions.

Don’t just rely on one or two individuals
Unfortunately, clubs often end up relying on one or two people to take on a lot of the work. It’s a good idea to spread the workload and ask others to take on more responsibility. That way, you are more likely to avoid burnout and retain your volunteers for longer.
Check to see if your Committee Members are over burdened. Are they responsible for tasks that could be carried out by another committee member or a club volunteer?

You might even be at the stage where your club requires subcommittees. Find out more in our subcommittees section.
