Surveys are an extremely popular method for collecting information. But have you ever discovered too late that your survey questions did not deliver useful or useable data?
This course is about learning the art of writing an effective questionnaire as well as what is involved in conducting a survey effectively. Starting with an overview of key steps in a survey, it then focusing on defining populations, types of samples, methods of data collection, questionnaire length, data collection timetables and ways to minimise nonresponse. In addition it focuses on key principles of questionnaire design covering general principles, and the issues in asking factual, subjective and sensitive questions. The day is designed so that participants can ask questions and make comments throughout. There are also workshops to put learning into practice.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will:
- Have a good awareness of the aspects of planning a survey including defining populations, types of samples, methods of data collection, questionnaire length, data collection timetables and ways to minimise nonresponse
- Have a greater recognition of the different aspects involved in writing good survey questions and questionnaires.
- Have the tools to critique existing surveys
- Have the knowledge to be able to write their own high quality questionnaires
About the Deliverer
Dr. Campanelli is a survey methods specialist, chartered scientist, chartered statistician, fellow of the academy of social sciences and an international trainer, researcher and consultant who runs her own business, “The Survey Coach”. Her background is in social statistics, survey methodology, and psychology with a special interest in the study of survey error and data quality focusing on questionnaire design, question testing strategies, interviewing techniques, sampling and weighting, survey analysis, and mixed-mode designs.
