Funded MSc/MRes Strength & Conditioning Studentship

Welsh Boxing, in collaboration with Cardiff Metropolitan University and Sport Wales, are offering a part-funded opportunity for a student to obtain a MSc/MRes in Strength & Conditioning or Youth Athletic Development, alongside completing a placement with Welsh Boxing that will offer the opportunity to develop your professional skills & practice

Placement details

Time commitment: Delivery at weekend national camps (one every 3-4 weeks), plus opportunities to coach athletes from different sports on Tuesday/Wednesday evenings.

Location: Sport Wales National Centre, Cardiff

Duration: The placement will begin in September 2024, and last for a maximum of one year

Benefits: £6000 towards tuition fees, travel expenses, and access to internal CPD

Responsibilities & Objectives

  • Plan and deliver physical testing, movement skills, and resistance training sessions for national development boxing squads, with an emphasis on athlete education
  • Collaborate with boxing coaches to conduct holistic individual athlete reviews and facilitate athlete goal setting
  • Complete CPD activities such as attending intern development sessions with other interns, 1-to-1 mentorship meetings, and engaging in ongoing personal development

Person Specification

  • An undergraduate degree (2:1 or higher; 2:2 with relevant industry experience) in sport science, strength & conditioning, or a related subject
  • Experience of coaching in a group-based setting, ideally with youth athletes
  • A long-term commitment to a career in strength & conditioning coaching
  • Proactive and organised
  • Excellent ability to develop relationships and facilitate a motivating environment for youth athletes
