Sporting Journey - Meinir's Story

At Sport Wales we know that every individual athlete needs a unique development environment to best meet their needs. Here Welsh Masters hockey player Meinir Thomas shares her story of a sporting journey that has been varied, interesting and enjoyable.

I have always been sporty. I played football in the school fields with the boys as I grew up. In comprehensive school athletics was my thing and I ran 800m for my county. I always enjoyed hockey and played for Gwynedd and North Wales. There were no football teams for girls back then - so that took a back seat and hockey became 'my sport.'

I stopped playing hockey when I went to college, got married and had children. My eldest son, Steffan was profoundly disabled and needed 24-hour care, so sport (and other hobbies) became impossible for me to take part in.
Steffan died in 2007 and I started running to help me cope with the grief. Caring for Steffan had been my life and everything was planned according to his needs. Sport and keeping active helped me come out of a very sad and difficult time. It's now a very important part of my life in so many ways.

I took hockey back up properly a couple of years back and then I saw an advert on Twitter for the Welsh Masters Trials (over 50s). I thought I would give it a try as I had nothing to lose and everything to gain! I was selected and played in the Home Nations last June and the Master's World Cup in Barcelona. My first cap was against England in the Home Nations, an incredibly proud and emotional moment. Nothing feels better than playing for the dragon on your Welsh kit.

In football I had the opportunity to join Amlwch Town Ladies when I was 48 years old. I wanted very much to play football for a team and I still play for them today. I was very lucky to be selected for the Ynys Mon women's football team to play in the International Island Games in Jersey in 2015 and in Gotland in 2017. I celebrated my 50th birthday playing football for my island - what an honour!

Sport is more than the competitions or the caps for me. My health has improved immensely, and I have made so many new friends. It helps keep me young and has opened so many doors.
It's all about taking opportunities - go for it.
