Rhys came through the Disability Sport Wales Community programme, when he was identified by a Development Officer.

Rhys competed in the 2012 London Paralympic Games in the T37 100m & 200m as well as the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France.

Rhys was a nominated torch bearer and carried the flame through Britton Ferry in May 2012, and was also a Baton Bearer for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

In 2014 Jones was named in the Wales squad for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He ran in the T37 100m, qualifying through the first heat in second place with a time of 12.10 and in the final he posted a time of 12.04 to take the bronze medal.
