In 2004, as a junior cyclist Geraint won his first world title in the scratch race and has continued to consistently perform on the world stage. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games he took bronze in points race, and silver in the team pursuit at the world track championships. In 2007 and 2008 he held the team pursuit world title, and won his first Olympic gold medal in Beijing 2008.

Geraint also had success on the road, and in the 2010 Tour de France held the white jersey for stages 3 to 7 with Team Sky. In 2011 he won Bayern-Rundfahrt, and was second in Dwaars door Vlaanderen.

2012 was a golden year for cycling in Britain, and Geraint repeated his success of 2008 with a team pursuit world medal, and his second Olympic gold medal in the team pursuit.

He then turned his focus to the road with Team Sky. In 2013 he was an integral part of Team Sky's second Tour de France victory. Geraint helped inspire the team over a gruelling three weeks of action, despite riding through the pain of a cracked pelvis. He also had a stage win in the Tour Down Under, finishing third overall, and finished second overall in Bayern-Rundfahrt.

In 2014, he completed a successful classics campaign and most recently won Bayern-Rundfahrt for a second time.

Thomas, went straight from his highest-placed finish in the Tour de France to the Commonwealth Games, where he won a bronze in the Time Trial and then, remarkably, overcame a late puncture and a wheel change to claim gold in the Road Race. It was a performance that secured him the public vote to win the BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year Award.
